The Young Parents Group was set up in August 2004 as it
was felt that there was a need to support the young parents who attended
the project. The young parents felt that the youth clubs were no longer
relevant to them and most had had housing support from CAST and felt
a need for parenting support.
The Young Parents Group has been running regularly since,
meeting every six weeks. There has always been a good attendance of
both new Mums & Dads. Most young people start attending a few months
before the baby is due. This gives them an opportunity to chat with
the more experienced parents and gain a more realistic view of parenting!
The group enjoy a range of different activities. We have
visited various soft play centres and swimming pools. We have gone to
the cinema for special parent and baby screenings and had picnics in
the better weather. In true CYP style we have had B-B-Q's at the beach
in the rain and a very muddy special summer trip to East Links Family
Park in Dunbar!
What we aim for is a relaxed and informal atmosphere where
the young parents can enjoy time with their peers sharing experiences
(good and bad!) without fear of being judged or criticised but feeling
supported by the other parents and the staff at CYP.
